2. Visual Literacy
For this specific assignment I was asked to look at a picture and criticize it using the PAT model. The message depicted through the image is kind of misleading. The title of the image is “Overproteined” which leads me to believe at first that the information being conveyed is about protein. Nothing in the title gives way to Americans or people ingesting too much protein. As I continued to look at the image and read, I found out that it was about Americans eating different types of meat which was insinuating that we, as Americans, eat too much protein. The images of a big mac, KFC bucket, and a hot dog are misleading though; it almost made me think that the picture would inform me of Americans eating too much fast food not protein in general. As far as the image itself, I think it has great characteristics and catches the audience’s eye. The perception part of the image uses good proximity with each row being displayed. The colors of each row add a great contrast that also distinctly separates the different boxes making each of them easy to read. In each box the words are aligned in the center which catches the eye more than if it were aligned all to the left of the boxes. The last part of the PAT model is tools, which were used well. Having the numbers a bigger font and bolder was a good idea, it better facilitates the statistical point of the image. As I stated above the colors of each individual box are eye pleasing as well. The clip art is the only thing I would change in image. A better option might have been no clip art at all or possibly taking out the KFC bucket and leaving the other three images. This way the reader wouldn’t jump to the conclusion of it being about fast food and would make it less confusing.
